As a little girl, I watched a rabbit hop into a large hedgerow behind our home. I decided to follow the rabbit. I tunneled into the hedgerow using my hands to break away the twigs until I found a space large enough for me to sit upright. I remember thinking, "Oh, this is just right for me." I cleaned it up as best I could, dragging the debris out into the yard.
In a kitchen drawer I found some of those small birthday cake candles, some matches, a tray and a cup that I filled with water. I grabbed a towel from the linen closet. Then I returned to my secret space in the hedgerow. There I placed the towel down on the ground for a place to sit. With my legs tucked close to my body, I proceeded to set up the tray, candles and water. My first very own altar!
I was very careful with the matches and made sure all fires were out before I left my magickal space. I didn't want anything to happen to the hedgerow, the rabbits or me.
I recall many a delightful afternoon practicing spells with my candles in that secret space. After a while even the rabbits became accustomed to my presence. A few carrots now and then helped, too. The hedgerow is gone now. So are the rabbits. I am much too large to fit in that space now. However, the memories will be with me forever.
CANDLE BURNING RITUAL BASICS
The following guidelines are offered on the basis of personal experience, as well as information shared by individuals of like mind.
Candle colors
The introduction of colors into a candle, creates a vibration or energy in alignment with the intent. Each candle in candle magick represents either intent, the driving force needed to apply action or the individual for which the spell is performed.
Each individual must ascertain which color best suits their own personality.
Establish intent.
Choose Moon phase, Day of the week and Hour to begin burning. See Calendar for more information.
Always trust your intuition! Approach candle burning from a place of trust and innocence. If something feels right, do it! If not, don't!
Smudge down area chosen to burn candle with appropriate incense of Sage and Cedar or circle yourself and spell space with salt, to create a Sacred Space and a clear working area.
How complex the ritual becomes is personal choice. Candles can be chosen to represent the God and Goddess, day of the week in addition to intent candle and recipient's spell candle.
Some sources recommend adding water to candle holder to aid in removal of wax after candle has burned out, and to represent the element of water. Be sure to choose a safe place for your candle. Beeswax candles are completely dripless if not placed in drafts.
NEVER leave a burning candle unattended!
Choose Oil to "dress" candle.
To "dress" your candle, place chosen oil on thumb and forefinger, start in the middle of the candle, and twist up. Return to the middle of candle and twist down. (Represents "as above, so below.") You can say whatever seems appropriate while doing this. Perhaps stating intent and desired result. "Dressing" also makes for easier cleanup.
As you light the candle, empower it by saying, "Blessed Be Thou Creature of Fire."
"Once a candle has been dressed and empowered for a certain purpose, NEVER use it for any other reason except it's established intent!"...unless you're broke or the electricity bombs and you need light.
Stare into the flame and visualize what you desire. Candle magick teaches you concentration.
If this is a one day ritual, let the candle burn all the way down. A 3 day ritual means the candle burns down a third each time it's lit. A 7 day ritual, a seventh, etc. Some witches need all the help they can get.
Chanting while staring into the flame, or in any way verbalizing (especially rhyme) what you desire, adds power to the ritual.
NEVER blow out a magickal candle. Snuff or pinch out the flame.
Note: There are times when a specific candle color is unavailable. At these times you may paint a candle or wrap the candle in a ribbon of your color choice instead.
