Unsafe Herbs

Herbs are aromatic, beautiful and "nature's miracle plants." However, herbs have their own "dark side" just like everything else in this binary system of light and dark, good and evil. Picking herbs from the wild can be dangerous because of misidentification. Foxglove leaves have been mistaken for comfrey; hellebore, for wild onions.

Mislabeling of dried and packaged herbs in stores is possible because of poor quality control in collecting these herbs in some parts of the world.

Even herbals, old or new, can contain misinformation. One herbal can proclaim a certain plant safe while in another book you might read that the same herb is dangerous. It is true that some herbs can make you violently ill or even cause death.

Foxglove, which is a biennial flowering plant and one which you see in many flower gardens today, is a herb. But one which is too powerful to be used without medical supervision. Scientists use the extract Digitalis from the foxglove to treat congestive heart failure. It is highly prized for its medical benefits, but it is one herb that should only be grown for the beauty of its blossoms. You should always seek the advice of your physician when dealing with a serious illness. Symptoms can be deceiving. Also see - Alphabetical Herb List

I prefer growing my own herbs because I can be sure that they are grown organically and I have already put a lot of energy into their care so they are bound to care for me. Raising my own herbs gives me control over the growing process, collecting, drying and packaging. If you are unable to grow your own herbs, most of the herbs you will use can be found on the net. We particularly recommend Richter Herbs on-line.
