Garden 1

"Like a big mountain, a small garden stimulates, restores, and delights us, just as it poses challenges, promotes mastery, provides exercise and relieves monotony."
The Power of Place, Winifred Gallagher

Moon Planting

Writer, Joseph Campbell and anthropologist, Manuela Dunn Mascetti, wrote that the first agriculturists were women, the members of the tribe who stayed home to tend the fires and the young while the men went out to hunt for food. Just like the women of today, their cyclic natures were attuned to moon cycles and the moon was as important to the growing of crops as were the seasons.

During the growing season, some of the plants are bushier and bear more fruit - more food for the tribe. The reason could be the seed itself or the soil, the planting method, the amount of sun or rain, or the season which makes one group of plants healthier than the rest.

I gardened for a long time with a hit and miss record. During the growing season, I would garden day and night selecting seeds, preparing the soil, planting the seed at the correct depth, and hoping for the right amount of sun and rain, leaving other chores to chance and wearing myself out in the process. "Moon planting" helped me acquire discipline and left me time to just "hang out" and my success rate zoomed to the top of the charts. First, my garden's growth and well being is apparent in the abundant and healthy yields we've enjoyed over the years. Second, by eliminating the guess work and letting the moon sign determine when to do what, i.e., starting seeds, preparing the soil, transplanting, pruning and weeding - gardening now seems effortless and is most rewarding.

A capsule version of moon planting: plant above-the-ground crops, like tomatoes, lettuce, beans, during the waxing or growing moon and underground crops like radishes, potatoes, onions during the waning or decreasing moon; prune during a fertile moon sign for further growth and prune or weed during a dry sign to inhibit growth. Rain most often occurs in a water sign during the new or full moon cycle. Click on BEST DAYS and bookmark our Monthly Gardening Calendar for easy access.
