Backyard Birding

Attract Colorful Wildbirds to Your Backyard
. Birds are voracious insect eaters and helpmates in your garden and provide natural pest control. Birds have three main survival needs: food, water and protection. Replace a grassy area with a bed of shrubs and fruit trees. Create a pile of branches and twigs in an out-of-the-way area for ground dwelling birds. Choose plants that fruit throughout all seasons, to insure a constant source of food for the birds. Allow a few rose hips to develop in the fall. The hips will provide much needed nourishment during the winter months. Several well-positioned bird feeders allow you to enjoy our feathered friends' visits even in winter. Birdbaths and watergardens can provide the necessary water requirements of birds. Here are a few suggestions for types of plants that attract birds:

Fruit trees: cherry hawthorn, dogwood, crabapple.
Shrubs: Barberry, bayberry, coralberry, holly, pyracantha, blackberry, blueberry, cherries, strawberry.

Flowers: red trumpet, red bee balm, touch-me-not will attract hummingbirds.

Evergreens around open lawn: robin, dove, sparrow, starling.
There is a long list of birds that will accept birdhouses placed in the proper habitat. A little research on individual bird requirements as to size and placement will go a long way in attracting insect loving birds to your garden. Then you'll be settling back by your water garden and listening to bird song!
