House Plants

Light requirement considerations

All plants need light to grow and you need to know what kind and how much light your house plants require for successful photosynthesis. Most house plants are originally from the cool tropics. Warm tropical plants need a greenhouse environment.

In our first article we suggested that you consider the natural light in your home. Northern light, though constant throughout the day, is a low light and good for green foliage plants. Colored foliage requires a brighter light or may lose some color. If this should occur, supplement with fluorescent light. Eastern light is primarily a morning light. You may first try most plants in this light and later find that a brighter location would be more suitable for some. A sunny southern exposure may benefit a flowering plant in winter. However, a northern exposure in summer might suffice.

The most ideal light direction is a western exposure. You will need to monitor the area for adequate humidity and good air circulation. A curtain or screen can also be used to filter the hottest rays of the sun. Western exposures are the warmest in summer and if the sill area reaches temperatures above 85ºF, your plants could die. Cacti, other succulents and annuals do well in this location. Other kinds can be moved two to three feet back from the window and survive.

The glass, of course, should be kept clean at all times. Mirrors and reflectors can be used in real problem areas. Remember to consider your heating system. Know the heat requirements of your plants. You can always add artificial light if needed using the preferred best bulbs for growing or treat your plants to a dose of sunshine.

Consider the passage of the sun throughout the day. Check by looking through your windows for outdoor foliage which might create shadows. These, of course, may be pruned if possible. Seasonal changes of the sun's direction and intensity need also to be considered. Also look for large eaves that can block the sun at any particular time of the day. There are some plants, however, that do not like being moved at all.
